COWBRIDGE SKC
Cowbridge SKC @ The SEKU Portsmouth Open (November 2011)
On Saturday 19th November, the following members of the Cowbridge SKC squad travelled to Portsmouth, to compete in the SEKU Open Championships 2011.
(L-R Back Row: [ADULT SQUAD) Ashley Hunt (Squad Manager), Nicola Joseph, Michael Hackman, Gemma Hackman, Emma Robins, Shaun Banfield (Squad Coach)
Front Row: [JUNIOR SQUAD] Mena Langston, Ffion Langston, Emmanuelle Davies, Darcy Peel, Rhys Davies)
With some of the best competitors in the UK, and parts of Europe in attendance, the Cowbridge SKC squad were up against stiff competition. Every single member of the squad gave the performance of their competitive career to date, with the standard being raised to new heights.
Emma Robins 3rd Dan: Emma, this past few months, has increased her focus within her kata study and the efforts had an impressive outcome. In the first round, Emma performed Heian Godan, beating her opponent. This was repeated in the following two rounds, performing Heian Sandan and Heian Shodan, where she beat competitors that had beaten her in previous competitions. Within the kata final, she performed Gojushiho Sho where she achieved an impressive 0.5 mark higher than the closest finalist, resulting in her taking GOLD. Within the kumite, she impressively beat all of the competitors in her way, beating one competitors with an ippon, and resulted in her taking GOLD. She was therefore the female Grand Champion, and was awarded a competitor of the day award for her technical excellence.
Nicola Joseph 1st Dan: Due to an unfortunate draw list, Nicola faced a very talented karateka within her first round, where she performed Heian Shodan. Her performance was by far, easily her best performance to date, but was unable to proceed within the category.
Michael Hackman 5th Kyu: Michael did an outstanding job within the kata category, winning his way easily through three rounds of kata, performing Kihon, Heian Sandan and Heian Shodan. His technique was flawless, and did an outstanding job. Within the final, he performed his favourite kata Heian Nidan, and was 0.3 higher than his closest competitor, taking GOLD. Within the kumite he won his first fight with outstanding footwork and offensive skill, beating his opponent with two jodan punches. Within the second round however he faced the winner of the category, and was knocked out of the category.
Gemma Hackman 9th Kyu: Gemma within her first round performed the kata Kihon and easily sailed into the second round. Within the second round however she faced Darren Corneille – 5th kyu (Kiryoku Shotokan) and performed Heian Shodan, but was unfortunately knocked out of the category.
Rhys Davies 10th Kyu: Performed the kata Kihon with his typical power, charisma and gusto, but was unlucky to be drawn against a more experienced brown belt competitor. The brown belt only won marginally however, with 3 flags, to 2. Rhys’ spirit caught the attention of the public at the sides of the mats, who commented on his powerful performance.
Menna Langston 10th Kyu: Performed excellently, winning her way through two rounds before losing to a green belt, with 3 flags, to 2. Menna has made outstanding improvements in the last few months, and her power and technique have improved dramatically.
Ffion Langston 10th Kyu: Like the rest of the junior squad performed the kata Kihon. She has been working incredibly hard this past few months on improving her power and technique, and did an outstanding job. Unfortunately however – due to the category allowing all grades - she faced a senior grade, and was not able to proceed any further.
Darcy Peel 10th Kyu: Darcy did an outstanding job with her kata Kihon, winning her way through two rounds. Within one of the rounds, she faced a talented, experienced black belt, but her technique and power resulted in her beating the black belt. Unfortunately however in the third round, she was knocked of the category by another senior grade.
Emmanuelle Davies 10th Kyu: This is the most upsetting part of the day. Emmanuelle won her way through two rounds of the kata category, beating her competitors with her outstanding fighting spirit and excellent technique. An administrative error upon the judging table however resulted in the category proceeding without her being included in the running, so she was unable to continue, in spite of her winning every round up until that point. I have no doubt whatsoever that Emmanuelle would have been taking a trophy home, had it not been for this error.
Overall results:
Michael Hackman: 1st Kyu Grade Adult Kata (Gold)
Emma Robins: 1st Brown and Black Belt Ladies Kata (Gold)
Emma Robins:1st Brown and Black Belt Ladies Kumite (Gold)
Emma Robins: Overall Female competitor of the day (technical excellence)

Cowbridge SKC Grading with Sensei Hazard 7th Dan
On Friday 8th April, Sensei Hazard conducted a pre-grading course and grading for Cowbridge SKC members. As always, Sensei amazed all with his outstanding ability, and keen eye for detail.

Gemma – 9th Kyu
Emmanuelle – 9th Kyu Mon

The Legend Open 2011 - Bracknell
On the 12th March 2011, the Cowbridge SKC squad travelled to Bracknell to compete in the Legend Open 2011 (Shobu-ippon).
Our small but very dedicated dojo reaped an impressive array of medals, here are the results:
Liam Hooper – 2nd Individual Kata
3rd Individual Kumite
Michael Hackman - 3rd Individual Kata
3rd Individual Kumite
Paul Hooper - 3rd Individual Kumite
Unfortunately, due to dodgy decision making at times, Emma Robins narrowly missed out on reaching the podium, and Nicola Joseph was disqualified.
Of most importance to us as a dojo – as Martial Artists – however is not how important we did in collecting trophies, but more in the improvement of performance. Every single member, whilst not all collected a trophy, demonstrated a huge improvement not only from last year’s Legend Open, but even from the last competition attended in November. From a Martial Art perspective, this is of a far higher significance. Well done all for your commitment to the dojo and Karate-Do.
Merry Christmas COWBRIDGE SKC
I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of Cowbridge SKC for making 2010 such a huge success. This year has brought impressive competitive success, but more significantly, it has been twelve months of development, resulting in standards raising and understanding deepening. There is an ethos of commitment to the dojo and to the Martial Art, and I am proud to work with you all so closely.
I would also like to thank those who have visited Cowbridge SKC from other associations to train with us. Your presence has been greatly appreciated and has helped further deepen the 'Open Door' policy of the Martial practices of the dojo. Everyone, from all backgrounds brings something interesting and different and training alongside my members has been very important.
A special thanks goes to our Chief Instructor, Dave Hazard 7th Dan; a gentleman with the lethal abilities of a sword.
Enjoy your Xmas and see you all in the New Year!

Shaun Banfield
The ASK Instructor Class (Nottingham)
On Sunday 25th July 2010, Shaun Banfield and Emma Robins – instructors of Cowbridge ASK – travelled to Nottingham to train with Sensei Hazard in the annual ASK Instructor Class.
Sensei Hazard, awesome as always, taugBanfield and Emmaht two excellent sessions focussing on kumite, kata and kicking.
Mike Hackman's "To The World's and Beyond!!!" Blog
Mike Hackman, a dedicated member of Cowbridge ASK, has started a Blog to track his development and training towards the World Championships in October.
On the 8th May 2010, ASK Cowbridge brought a team to the Shobu Ippon International Open 2010 held in Guildford, Surrey. As always, this is a superbly organised and well attended international competition.
The small, but talented team after travelling up on the Friday night set out early to the competition proudly bearing the ASK jackets. Within, all members competed excellently, all working through the early rounds. Sadly however, fate wasn’t to bring all members to the finals, though I must say all members made a huge and marked improvement from previous events, a testament to their dedication and hard training.
There was one member of the team however who went all the way. Liam Hooper took gold in kumite, demonstrating superb ability and skill. Liam worked his way through a tough category completely unfazed, and brought home the GOLD.
Whoop, Whoop for the HOOP!!!!!!!
So all in all, this was a superb event where everyone shone and did themselves and the club proud. Thank you all!!!!!
